In the tumultuous political environment of interwar Romania, an idiosyncratic fascist movement rose to prominence. The Legion of the Archangel Michael, more popularly known as the ‘Iron Guard’ combined the anti-semitic and anti-communist tenants of other contemporary fascist movements with Christian mysticism and an overriding emphasis on violence and martyrdom. Guided by these beliefs, the Iron Guard would, in the 14 years of its existence, earn a reputation for itself as one of the most infamous far-right organizations in European history.
